Welcome to my world!
I am an Instructional Technology Specialist. I am a teacher. I am a learner. I am a problem solver. I am a listener. I am a promoter. I am a cheerleader. And I enjoy every minute of my work.
Here is how it happened. I graduated from Boston College with a B. A. in Mathematics and a minor in secondary education. My first job was teaching Geometry and Algebra II in a private girls high school. Not all of my students were eager to fine tune their mathematical thinking skills. As Dan Meyer references in hisTEDtalk, I was employed to “sell a product to a market that doesn’t want it but is forced to buy it”. But I stuck it out and followed my reluctant learners through pre-calculus. And I enjoyed every minute of my work.
Life happened. I married my college sweetheart, Ken, and soon we were moving up and down the east coast while our family grew to five. My twelve year sabbatical from education ended when we “settled” in Westford, Massachusetts. All three children were in school all day and it was time for me to think about furthering my education and returning to the work force. A neighbor suggested a masters program in Instructional Technology. This was a area of big change over the last decade.
After completing the two year Masters in Education program in Instructional Technology at Lesley University, I was hired as an Instructional Technology Specialist at the Norman E. Day School in Westford. I supported the great teachers there for 4 years and then was hired as the first Instructional Technology Specialist at Westford Academy. Ten years later I am still learning, teaching and enjoying every minute of my work. I have instructed many professional development workshops and courses in Westford over the past 15 years and consider myself fortunate to have worked with so many great teachers in this district.
My wonderful family continues to amaze me. My husband travels around the country as a healthcare consultant; Chris, 27, will be working as an English teacher at Wakefield Memorial High School; Emily, 25, lives in Brooklyn, NY while working at the Council on Foreign Relations and will be entering a Masters Program at University College London in September; Liza, 21, is a fourth year elementary and special education student major at Boston University; and Miss Maia, 6, is excited about starting 2nd grade.
I am an Instructional Technology Specialist. I learn from my family, my colleagues, and my students. I learn at home, in school and online. I teach my family, my colleagues, and my students. I teach at at home, in school and online. And I enjoy every minute of my work.
